Tite steps down as Brazil coach after defeat to Croatia ends World Cup dream

Tite has stood down from his role as Brazil manager after they were knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia on Friday evening.

It is the second time in a row that Brazil have lost at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup after they were beaten in a penalty shootout by the 2018 finalists.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was chosen as the number one throughout the tournament ahead of Manchester City's Ederson while Fabinho had to settle for a place on the bench.

Despite being the top scoring Brazilian in the Premier League this season, Roberto Firmino was left at home as Tite opted for the likes of Antony and Gabriel Martinelli - Tite's departure though could open the door for him again going forward.

Tite confirmed his decision to step down after the World Cup back in February, having spent six years in the role. "I'm going until the end of the World Cup," Tite told SporTV. "I have no reason to lie here. I don't want to win any way. I've won everything in my career, the only thing missing is the World Cup."

Rodrygo and Marquinhos both missed their spot kicks to end Brazil's dream of a sixth World Cup crown as Croatia now await the winner of the Netherlands vs Argentina.
