The Tennessee Titans have three quarterbacks but only one spot for a starter. Through offseason activities, neither Malik Willis nor Will Levis has made up any ground on starter Ryan Tannehill to take over the starting spot.
This means as the team approaches training camp, the position battle to keep an eye on is between Willis and Levis for the No. 2 spot. Tennessee drafted Willis in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. Willis was raw coming out of Liberty and rough around the edges as a passer. But his freakish athleticism and natural leadership made him too good to pass up.
Just to the 2023 NFL draft and the Titans once again saw them in the position to draft a guy much later than pundits predicted who is raw but a freakish athlete. Levis is a different type of player over Willis but both guys are a work in progress.
Whichever quarterback doesn’t end up backing up Tannehill is going to redshirt and be inactive for much of the season. A tremendous learning opportunity and one injury away from getting a helmet on gameday. Based on reports, it really feels like this position battle could come down to performance in preseason games. We are rooting for Levis to win the backup job to get him that level of connection with Tannehill and help speed up his development.
