Titans’ Roger McCreary talks expectations, rookie camp, baked beans

Tennessee Titans cornerback Roger McCreary was one of the team’s most surprising picks during the 2022 NFL draft, but not because he lacks talent.

Cornerback wasn’t thought to be a high enough priority that the Titans would spend a second-round pick on the position, but the move was understandable with the uncertainty surrounding 2021 first-round pick, Caleb Farley, and with the Titans’ use of the dime defense.

As far as the expectations of being a second-round pick go, McCreary says he isn’t concerned with that, but rather getting better as the offseason progresses.

“I’m not worried about where I got drafted or trying to be the best one here,” McCreary said. “It’s just about me getting better.”

McCreary took part in rookie minicamp over the weekend and was thrilled to be working with professional coaches, especially defensive backs coach Anthony Midget.

“It’s been good,” McCreary said. “I would say finally being coached by a professional coach, just to see the experience and how practice is and everything, it’s just great to learn from him and just see how his mind works and how the defense is. I just like everything about it.”

“Technique-wise, we don’t just play one coverage, we play everything,” McCreary added. “Each coverage — like zone or man — no matter what, it’s just techniques. I learn from different coaches, he teaches me something new and I feel like it’s a lot, I feel like it was great that he taught me his new technique and everything.”

One of the things we learned about McCreary upon being drafted was his unusual pre-game meal, which consists of baked beans and sugar.

While McCreary admitted he needs to make changes to his diet, cutting out baked beans won’t be one of them.

“I’m not giving them up — I wouldn’t say that,” McCreary said. “I’m trying to get better on my diet and everything, but I’m not giving up beans.”
