Titans NRLW star Pelite loves 'junkyard' fullback role

Powerhouse Gold Coast fullback Evania Pelite has a unique way of playing her position but is confident her "junkyard" style can worry Newcastle in the NRLW grand final.

The 28-year-old has averaged a stellar 184 running metres per game this season on the way to scoring five tries.

Her showdown with her opposite number, Dally M NRLW player of the year Tamika Upton, could well decide Sunday's clash.

"I know I am not the typical fullback," Pelite told AAP.

"I'm not the Tamika Upton, Reece Walsh or James Tedesco style of fullback.

"My speed is not my greatest strength. It is my power through the middle.

"A lot of the fullbacks play on the edges and trying to link up with the centres and wingers and find them space. You have probably noticed I hunt around the middle and try and get those powerful carries."

The tactic has worked a treat.

The Titans out-muscle opponents and get in a real grind, with middle forwards Shannon Mato, Jessika Elliston and skipper Georgia Hale leading the way.

"Being able to run off the back of their hard work and powerful carries has made my job a lot easier," Pelite said.

Pelite grins when asked how she would describe the Titans style of play.

"Everyone keeps referring to it, and it is our trademark … the junkyard dogs," she said.

"We have that pack mentality and we all want to play for each other.

"Everyone has bought into all the processes Murph (coach Karyn Murphy) has set for us this season. Not one person has stepped out of line."

An Olympic gold medal winner with the Australian Rugby Sevens side in Rio in 2016, Pelite is now focused on one thing.

"There is a lot that I have achieved in other sports but I want to achieve everything I can in my NRLW career before I hang up the boots, which won't be any time in the near future," Pelite said.

"The goal to win the first premiership for the Gold Coast has been my sole focus this year."

Outshining her Queensland teammate Upton will go a long way towards realising that dream against defending premiers the Knights.

"I rate Meeks (Upton) so highly," Pelite said.

"That is why she is the Queensland fullback. I love playing for the Maroons at centre alongside her but I know I have more power than Meeks.

"I will definitely be using that to the best of my ability and hopefully that helps us get one over the Knights."
