With the Tennessee Titans owning the No. 147 overall pick (fifth round) in the 2023 NFL draft, we’re taking a look back at the franchise’s history of selections in that spot.
The Titans have owned the No. 147 overall pick once in franchise history, which came in 1987 while they were the Houston Oilers. At the time, the selection was located in the sixth round.
And with that pick, the Oilers selected linebacker Al Smith out of Utah State, which turned out to be a great move.
Davis, who tallied 100 tackles or more five times, spent 10 seasons in Houston, earning a pair of Pro Bowl nods and one first-team All-Pro selection, feats that are no doubt rare when it comes to late-round picks.
Once his playing career was over, Smith joined the Titans in 1998, serving as the director of player development and pro scouting until 2007. He has also served as the Chairman of the Board of Chapter Presidents for the NFL Alumni Association, according to his Linkedin page.
The Titans own six picks in this year’s draft, with one in every round but the fourth thanks to the Julio Jones trade in 2021. Tennessee can only dream of this year’s No. 147 overall pick working out like Smith did.
