For the second straight year, Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard has been voted among the league’s best safeties in an ESPN survey that factors in the opinions of NFL executives, coaches and scouts.
In the list compiled by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Byard actually fell four spots from No. 3 last year, to No. 7 this year, although the reason behind that, as Fowler writes, was not because of a perceived drop off in performance.

One of the game’s most consistent performers, Byard promises ball production every year. He averages about four interceptions per season (27 picks in seven seasons). He’s the only player on the list with five seasons of at least four interceptions.
That Byard fell four spots year over year is not indicative of a declining skill set.
“There’s not really a drop-off here, it’s just a byproduct of a crowded safety group and different styles of players that can play into preferences,” an AFC personnel veteran said. “[Byard] is just so solid and has plus instincts. And he embodies that Mike Vrabel toughness and discipline.”
The explanation for Byard’s drop in the rankings softens the blow and is appreciated, even if Titans fans may not agree with it. Here’s a look at the impressive group of safeties ranked ahead of Byard:

- Derwin James Jr., Chargers
- Justin Simmons, Broncos
- Budda Baker, Cardinals
- Jevon Holland, Dolphins
- Jessie Bates III, Falcons
Regardless, it’s always nice to see Byard getting the national recognition he deserves, and that’s especially true when it comes from those inside the sport.
Byard is the second Titan to crack one of these ESPN surveys, as defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons was ranked No. 3 at his position. No Titans made the cut for the edge rusher, off-ball linebacker and cornerback surveys.
ESPN has yet to release its surveys for tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, offensive tackles, guards and centers, and quarterbacks yet, but we’ll definitely let you know if any Titans make those lists when they’re released.
