Report: Titans hire John Fassel as special teams coordinator

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect that although Fassel has been hired, Anderson’s termination is not official.

Fresh off hiring a new general manager, Mike Borgonzi, on Friday, the Tennessee Titans continued to make changes to the franchise on Monday.

While many were busy enjoying Martin Luther King Day activities or taking in the pageantry of the inauguration, the Titans were busy making adjustments to their coaching staff.

In a move many of the team’s fan base has been waiting for, head coach Brian Callahan has informed special teams coordinator Colt Anderson “he’s out.”

The Titans’ special teams were atrocious throughout the 2024 campaign and ranked at or near the bottom of the league in most metrics that are tracked for these units. From Week 1 through Week 18, the Titans have found different ways to be historically bad on special teams this season.

To take the place of Anderson, the Titans are hiring former Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel to reshape the unit.

Fassel has an extensive background in special teams after starting his career in 2005 as a special teams assistant with the Baltimore Ravens. After entering the league, he led units with the Oakland Raiders and then the Los Angeles Rams before joining the Cowboys in 2020.

He became available when the Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy a week ago.

This is a huge move for the Titans and already their second major signing this important offseason as they set out to improve on their 3-14 debacle of 2024.
