Titans finished near bottom of NFL in using motion at the snap

The Tennessee Titans were among the team to utilize motion at the snap the least during the 2022 season.

ESPN’s Seth Walder crunched the numbers after the Kansas City Chiefs had scored a pair of touchdowns using motion at the snap during the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it turns out the Titans ranked 28th in the NFL in that category at 10.3 percent.

As far as overall pre-snap motion is concerned, the Titans had a much higher rate, coming in at 54.7 percent, ranking 12th in the NFL.

Using more motion at the snap would be a nice new wrinkle Tennessee could add to the offense in 2023, but it is by no means vital to success.

We know that because the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles were two of the better units in the NFL in 2022, yet they both used motion at the snap at the fourth- and sixth-lowest rates, respectively. The Titans landed right in the middle of those teams.

Again, using motion at the snap certainly isn’t the end-all, be-all for the team’s offense, but after what we saw with the Titans’ group in 2022, it wouldn’t hurt to try some new things, with this being one of them.
