Tennessee Titans second-round pick and cornerback, Roger McCreary, was the team’s most surprising pick through the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft, as cornerback wasn’t high on the team’s list of needs.
The only thing more surprising than that is the fact that McCreary actually got his football acumen from his mom, who he says used to play linebacker when she was younger.
In fact, she even garnered the nickname “Icebox,” which comes from one of the best football movies of all-time, “Little Giants.”
“My mom played linebacker, they called her ‘Icebox,’” McCreary explained on The Richard Sherman podcast. “So, she’s the one who put that toughness in me. That’s a strong, independent mom.”
He isn’t kidding.
Had the opportunity to sit down with Roger McCreary from Auburn on this week’s podcast. Roger is one of the top corner’s in the Draft. Crazy story about his mom playing Middle Linebacker as well. McCreary admitted after he was drafted that he was unsure what his role will be, and we’re in the same boat.
The Titans figured to be mostly set at cornerback with Caleb Farley, Kristian Fulton and Elijah Molden, but the selection of McCreary, who is no doubt a talented player, raises questions about the team’s confidence in Farley, who has plenty of medical concerns entering his second season.
Granted, we didn’t rule out the Titans taking a cornerback in this draft as an insurance policy for Farley, but we didn’t expect such a selection to come as early as it did.
Whatever the case may be, the Titans are now loaded with young talent at the cornerback position. It’ll be interesting to see how McCreary fits in.
