Titanium company Timet in bid to expand production following reports of new aerospace contract

A high-end manufacturer is said to have secured a major contract with an aerospace company and plans to add another production building to its site in Swansea.

American-owned Timet makes titanium products for a range of industries, including plates for the aerospace sector.

A pre-application consultation is under way for a new production building at Timet UK's Waunarlwydd base.

The consultation is being carried out by planning experts Evans Banks Planning, of Carmarthenshire.

Evans Banks Planning has published documents about the proposal on its website as part of a month-long consultation.

A design and access statement said Timet UK has been on the lookout for new contracts as well as diversifying its work.

"As a result of the above approach, the applicant has secured a significant major contract with a prominent customer in the global aerospace industry," it said.

The contract is expected to create up to 12 full-time posts, on top of the 156 at the Waunarlwydd site.

The 101m by 35m steel-framed production building would take shape on an area of hardstanding and scrub.

The titanium products would be made and tested there, with space also allocated for storage.

Some trees would need to be felled but substitute planting is proposed elsewhere at the site.

Other documents published deal with drainage, ecology and landscaping.

Timet UK faced a tough period in 2020 when the Covid pandemic caused a huge slump in the the global civil aviation sector.

During that year it consulted employees and the union Unite on 283 proposed redundancies at Waunarlwydd and its plant in the West Midlands.

Swansea councillor Chris Holley, who worked at the Waunarlwydd site when it was owned by Imperial Metal Industries (IMI), said the planned expansion of production was brilliant news.

"I just hope it goes from strength to strength," he said.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has contacted Timet UK for a response.
