Tipping Point's Ben Shephard praises player's decision after family tragedy and sad episode

Ben Shephaard has heaped praise on a Tipping Point contestant for how they planned to spend their prize money after they revealed a double family tragedy on the ITV show.

Wednesday's episode of the much loved quiz programme was tinged with real sadness before it had even begun, after both the Tipping Point Twitter account and presenter Ben announced that one of the players who featured in it, Cath, had died since filming took place. Paying tribute, Ben posted: "Today’s Tipping Point is a poignant one… since recording the show, lovely contestant Cath, pictured backstage here, has passed away. Our thoughts and love are with her family and friends."

There was another poignant moment in Wednesday's episode on ITV when Cath's fellow competitor, Afqad, made the final and earned himself the tidy sum of £3,150 for his efforts. And he won the admiration of both Ben and viewers at home when he said he'd be giving the money to charity and explained the reason why.

Prior to putting his faith in the counters in the final round, Afqad was quizzed by Ben on how he'd spend any money he won and he told him: "I'd like to give the money to the British Heart Foundation in memory of my mother who I sadly lost last year on Christmas Eve, very, very suddenly. And, also in memory of my brother in law, who we lost exactly a month before my mother, again through a heart condition very suddenly. That's why I'm here."

Ben responded: "Goodness me. Well it's a fabulous way of celebrating their lives and remembering them and to give them that money would be a very special way for you to say thank you to those charities." The host then shared a clip of him and Afqad on his Twitter timeline and wrote: "Such great work Afqad. Donating your £3150 winnings to the British Heart Foundation is a wonderful way of celebrating the lives of your Mother and Brother-in-law. Thank you for being a part of #TippingPoint!"
