Tipperary's John O'Dwyer announces retirement

Tipperary forward John O’Dwyer has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling.

O’Dwyer, who won All-Irelands with the county in 2016 and ‘19, when he was among the goals against Kilkenny in both finals, last featured for the county in the 2021 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Waterford and so the news doesn’t particularly come as a shock.

The 31-year-old suffered an ankle injury in 2021 and only returned to county training briefly last year having not featured in the Allianz League before then manager Colm Bonnar confirmed that he would not be featuring as “the injury left him too much of a gap to reach in time for Championship”.

He then wasn’t included in a 40-man panel that new manager Liam Cahill named last November ahead of the 2023 season.

In addition to his two senior All-Irelands, O’Dwyer, known as ‘Bubbles’, won Munster titles in 2015 and ‘16 and an All Star in 2014 having first joined the senior panel in 2013, as well as a Munster and All-Ireland under-21 medals in 2010.

In a statement issued through Tipperary GAA, the Killenaule man said: “I would like to thank all the management teams from minor level up to senior who helped me over the last 15 years.

“It was a great pleasure to represent my county and win some silverware along the way.

“Thanks to those close to me and to my club Killenaule, who without their support it wouldn’t have been possible. So long.”
