Tiny Scottish island with just 11 residents needs new 'carer for cows'

A remote and beautiful Scottish island is offering someone the chance to escape the rat race with a unique opportunity.

The tiny isle of Ulva, which lies of the west coast of Mull, is looking for someone to move there and become their livestock manager.

Home to just 11 permanent residents, Ulva was purchased by the local community group ‘North West Mull Community Woodland Company’ (NWMCWC) in 2018.

Since purchasing the island the group have been gradually reintroducing and build up agricultural activity and now expressions of interest are open for the role of Isle of Ulva Livestock Manager.

NWMCWC established a cattle herd comprising of 34 pedigree Highland heifers which are run extensively alongside a small sheep flock. A Highland stock bull will be joining the herd in early summer 2022.

The part time role, which has the scope to become a 'full agricultural tenancy' involves:

  • Day-to-day management of the cattle herd and sheep flock on Ulva
  • Deal with all aspects of livestock welfare and production
  • Some basic farmland maintenance
  • Compliance with the grazing requirements of the agri-environment climate scheme

According to the job description, anyone who applies will need to demonstrate relevant farming experience, preferably in similar landscapes and logistically challenging locations.

For newcomers to farming however, there is an 'opportunity to benefit from mentoring on a nearby farm on the Isle of Mull' for anyone wishing to expand their knowledge about hill livestock farming or 'otherwise wanting to take advantage of support to settle into this position'.

The job of livestock manager will begin in late spring to early summer 2022 and will include rental of a recently refurbished four-bedroom property on the farm.

All expressions of interest along with a CV including present situation and relevant experience should be directed to the Scottish Land Matching Service via email slms@nfus.org.uk , referencing Ulva in the subject heading.
