Tiny paralysed dog 'size of guinea pig' struggling to find home as she is so small

A tiny paralysed dog who is the "size of a guinea pig" is struggling to find a home that will take a puppy as small as her.

The disabled teacup Chihuahua named Gem weighs just 2.5kg and has two missing back legs.

She is currently being cared for by Natalia George and her team at Flori's Friends Rescue in Kent, who haven't been able to find someone with "other dogs small enough for her to play with".

Six-month-old Gem was hit on the back of her spine when she was born, and had to have a rear amputation in their care.

Despite being so petite, Natalia says people "shouldn't be fooled by her size - she is no handbag dog".

Gem is mobile, active and very fast, and enjoys scooting around the garden in her bright pink wheels.

But Natalia says "she just isn't getting any attention and people seem to miss her".

The "little warrior" dog likes to play fetch outside and loves socialising with other doggy pals.

She has a "large personality" in a small canine body, and is looking for a home that has another small dog she can play with.

Gem can also live with cats and older children.

Due to her incontinence, Gem wears a nappy and her bladder needs emptying four times a day.

"Of course, all training will be provided by us so adopters feel fully supported and ready to roll with her daily care," Natalia said.

First-time disabled dog owners will be considered, as she is "such an easy dog to have around".

Gem comes with a custom-made wheelchair and play suits for around the house.

Her potential adopter must have time and patience to continue her puppy training to ensure she continues to grow into a well-rounded dog.

Gem isn't the only disabled puppy desperate for a family to adopt her - Staffordshire bull terrier Frost is currently being cared for by Yappy Ever After in Derby, East Midlands.

The 11-month-old pup is deaf and was abandoned because of her disability.

Rescue centre manager, Louise Radford, said: “Frost is just like any other little puppy, [she's] into everything. She’s very inquisitive, happy and confident.”

Potential adopters for Frost must live in Derby, Nottingham or Chesterfield.
