'Tiny' museum in Scotland named best in the UK is perfect for Harry Potter fans

The Times has unveiled a list of the 'best tiny museums' in the UK and a Scottish institution is included.

The newspaper named seven "pocket-sized" museums across the nation in the article, located in places such as London, West Yorkshire, and Cumbria. The only Scottish destination to appear on the list is the Glenfinnan Station Museum in the Highland council area.

Glenfinnan Station is a working railway station that offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about the history of the West Highland Line. The museum is located in the station building, on the Down platform.

Among the most well-known and picturesque spots on the line is the Glenfinnan Viaduct at the top of Loch Shiel. Harry Potter fans will recognise it as a filming location for the Hogwarts Express, most notably in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Inside the museum, there are exhibits on the geology of the local area, the history of the line's construction, and the difficulties faced by those building it. There are also photos of the station and the surrounding area dating back to the 19th century, as well as a metal ticket machine and model trains.

Additionally, the museum features a reconstruction of the booking office with original tablet instruments. For those who want to pick up a souvenir to remember their time at the museum, there is a gift shop as well.

The Times wrote: "Whether you’re a keen trainspotter or revisiting your Harry Potter obsession, this quaint museum on a stretch of rail track considered to be one of the most dramatic in Britain is a perfect addition to your to-do list while visiting the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct.

"The Glenfinnan Station Museum is located inside what is still a working station and tells the story of the West Highland Line and in particular how the line from Glasgow to Mallaig was built."

More information can be found on the Glenfinnan Station Museum website. See the full list of tiny museums on The Times website.
