Tintwistle fire: More than 50 firefighters now tackling blaze

More than 50 firefighters are currently battling a blaze on moorland just over the border from Tameside in Tintwistle.

Crews from Bury, Marple and Stalybridge have been sent to help Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is also dealing with a number of other incidents elsewhere in the county.

The blaze is understood to have broken out on Saturday night at Tintwistle Low Moor.

Smoke can reportedly be seen across the hills towards Carrbrook, Stalybridge and Mossley .

According to fire chiefs, the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "Up to 50 firefighters continue to work with partners from Peak Park Rangers & United Utilities to tackle a fire on Tintwistle Low Moor.

"The cause is not yet known. Please take extra care in our countryside - dispose of cigarettes & glass bottles responsibly & don’t use BBQ’s."

It's understood the fire service is now arranging for a helicopter to come provide water air support.

A spokesman for GMFRS added that the Salvation Army was also going to support crews at the scene.

Firefighters are also continuing to battle a second, huge moorland blaze on the West Yorkshire border.

The fire on Marsden Moor is believed to have been caused by a barbecue.

The National Trust say around 300 hectares of moorland has been engulfed by the flames, and that wildlife such as nesting birds and mountain hares will have been lost.

A helicopter has been drafted in - reportedly costing the National Trust £2,000 an hour - and is dropping water from nearby reservoirs onto the flames.
