Finally, officially, it’s December — which means we can stop conducting hushed Christmas discussions out of earshot of November naysayers and start belting out Jingle Bells at the top of our lungs on the Circle line.
If your larder is already stuffed full of mince pies and your house is lit up like the Blackpool illuminations, it’s safe to say your head is firmly in December mode. And if it’s not, I have the perfect quick festive fix for you — hair tinsel.
According to Taiba Akhuetie, founder of zeitgiesty hair and blow-dry bar Keash Braids, decking out your ’do in more finery than the tree is the hottest way to outshine everyone else on the dancefloor this party season.
In her pop-up in Soho’s Wah Nails salon, Akhuetie has expanded her menu for the festive season to include a hair tinsel service in which revellers can add superfine foils in gold, silver or rainbow to their pre-party blow dry for just £3 per strand.
“This service is really popular,” says Akhuetie. “It works best on a super sleek look because the tinsel is straight, but you can actually create curls in the tinsel by running your nail across the strip, so it’s great for those who don’t want to straighten their hair too.”
Glittering gold looks great on honey hues and brunettes, while sparkling silver suits platinum blondes and rich reds. They’re remarkably low-maintenance too — you can wash and dry your hair as normal, but she advises steering clear of using straighteners or tongs on the tinsel.
They’re also easy to attach and remove, thanks to the help of tiny micro rings concealed at the root, and long lasting, so you can pop them in before your office do and have them taken out before your 9am meeting or keep them in from now until New Year.
The tree can wait.
