Tina Turner dead aged 83 as tributes pour in for rock and roll legend

Rock and roll legend Tina Turner has died at the age of 83, according to a statement issued by her representatives.

The Mirror reports that the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll died after a long illness at her home near Zurich in Switzerland on Wednesday. A private funeral ceremony will be held for close friends and family.

Tributes have poured in from fellow famous faces including Piers Morgan, who tweeted a photo of Turner bowing on stage and captioned it: "RIP Tina Turner. Simply, the best."

A black and white photograph of the singer was posted on her official Instagram account. It was captioned: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

"Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly."

Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26 in 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, USA. She found fame in the late 1960s as the singer of the band Ike & Turner Revue but later went on to find fame as a solo artist after divorcing the abusive Ike.

Her biggest hits include 'What's Love Got To Do With It', 'Private Dancer' and 'The Best', as well as her cover of Proud Mary originally performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival. She also performed the self-titled theme for Bond flick Goldeneye.

Over a career that spanned decades, she sold more than 180 million albums and won 12 Grammy Awards, including three Hall of Fame awards and a Lifetime Achievement gong. Turner also turned heads as merciless gang leader Aunty Entity alongside Mel Gibson in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
