The mother of one of two teenage girls killed at a level crossing has expressed her anger after discovering a safety feature installed after the tragedy was not working days before the 10th anniversary of her daughter’s death.
Charlotte Thompson, 13, and Olivia Bazlinton, 14, were hit by a train at the crossing in Elsenham, Essex, on 3 December 2005.
Olivia’s mother, Tina Hughes, 57, said she was distraught when she discovered the locking system installed after the accident at Elsenham was broken. “I’m delighted to hear that it’s now working again, but I had my heart in my mouth,” she said.
Network Rail said the gates had been permanently closed while under repair.
