There are few people who could make a glittery Louis Vuitton bib look chic.
23-year-old Timothée Chalamet, however, is one of the few.
And it was this precise garment which he wore to the 76th annual Golden Globes in January which cemented his status as a sartorial boundary pusher.
Since he first burst on to the silver screen in 2017 in the Luca Guadagnino-directed Call Me by Your Name (he became one of the youngest Oscar nominees for Best Actor for his role in the film), he has rarely shied away from making a bold fashion statement.
In fact, it's been announced that 24-year-old Chalamet is in talks to play the iconic Bob Dylan in Fox Searchlight's upcoming biopic Going Electric.
The film will reportedly follow Dylan as he moved from folk music to producing more commercially viable melodies and will no doubt include even more iconic fashion statements for Chalamet.
But perhaps nothing could divide the Internet quite as much as the minimalist moustache the actor debuted at the National Board Of Review Gala this week.
The remarkably thin-on-the-ground sprout of facial hair has divided opinion, but ever the trend-setter, Chalamet almost definitely is not apologising for it.
Off screen and on the red carpet, the best thing about Chalamet's unapologetic aesthetic is that it's all his own: he has famously shunned a stylist in favour of occasional text exchanges with Virgil Abloh and his frequent collaborator, Haider Ackermann.
It was Ackermann who was behind the beguiling metallic suit New York-native Chalamet sported during the Venice Film Festival in September to promote his film The King.
While other bright young things have pledged allegiance to one particular fashion house, Harry Styles has Gucci, Selena Gomez has Coach and Sophie Turner has Louis Vuitton, Chalamet does his own thing: he has previously donned myriad zany suits from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Stella McCartney.
Such is his prowess that he came second to Meghan Markle in Lyst's Year in Fashion Report of 2019's most powerful and influential dressers, while searches for Haider Ackermann spiked 806 per cent in the week he wore one of the brand's suits.
And as the promotional tour for his upcoming film Little Women commences, his styling choices have continued to set tongues wagging. In particular the Gorillaz t-shirt he wore with Thom Browne trousers to the London photocall.
Little Women is released in UK Cinemas on Boxing Day.
