Timo Werner reacts to Romelu Lukaku's transfer amid threat over Chelsea role

Timo Werner has joined the Chelsea faithful in expressing his excitement over the imminent return of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.

The Belgian international is expected to cost the Blues just under £100m, more than double the transfer fee they paid RB Leipzig to secure Werner.

Werner has claimed that Lukaku's presence will not only help the team, but could also go on to bring the best out of Werner himself.

The German forward struggled during his debut season at Stamford Bridge, notching just 12 goals in all competitions and often becoming a figure of ridicule due to the rate in which he was found guilty of a staggering missed chance.

Lukaku's arrival has led some to speculate over whether Werner will be placed further down the pecking order in West London and find game time harder to come by.

However, Werner is remaining optimistic over what Lukaku's signing means for his own future at the club, explaining how he could thrive in a striking partnership, citing his best form at RB Leipzig which often came next to a target man to play off of.

"He's probably one of the best three strikers in the world at the moment," The 25-year-old told Sky Sports when asked about Lukaku. "There is no question about that. I don't think we need to say too much about him. He's a world-class striker who would benefit any team.

"I certainly think at Leipzig that it always helped me having a big striker alongside me. I think that's always good because I'm not the biggest and when you play up front on your own, you always have the attention of one or two defenders.

"It's a good new weapon to have in our game when you know that if you play a long ball, he will hold it up. And then the fast players around him can the set off - I think that's good for any team."

During his first stint at the club, Lukaku actually endured similar fortunes to Werner, failing to score in any of his first 15 competitive outings in his first spell at the club - though he was significantly younger.

Lukaku has since become one of the most lethal marksmen on the continent after his two years at Inter, where he scored 64 times in 95 appearances, guiding the Italian giants to their first Serie A title in more than ten years.
