Timo Werner plans 'showdown talks' with Thomas Tuchel amid Chelsea uncertainty

Timo Werner is reportedly planning ‘showdown talks’ with Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel.

The German contributed a goal and two assists in the Blues’ FA Cup fifth round clash against Luton Town on Wednesday night.

But despite his positive display at Kenilworth Road, Werner’s stuttering form has frequently come into question during his time at Chelsea.

He has only started six of the reigning Champions League holders’ 25 Premier League matches this season and has not made a domestic appearance since Chelsea’s 1-1 away draw against Brighton in January.

And with his game time and form showing little sign of improving, the former RB Leipzig man is set to hold firm discussions about his future with Chelsea officials - including Tuchel.

A report from GOAL claims Werner’s representatives are set to meet Chelsea officials in the coming weeks.

It’s believed that they want to decipher what the German international’s role and involvement will be at the club, with the summer transfer window in mind.

Moreover, Borussia Dortmund are also purported to be interested in signing Werner, and the striker is also said to be keen on a move - if there is little future at Chelsea.

Werner was brought to Stamford Bridge in Frank Lampard’s second season at the club, at a hefty cost of £47.5million.

While his overall record of 19 goals and 19 assists in 76 appearances is not disastrous, Werner’s debut season was blighted by a series of poor and sometimes embarrassing misses in front of goal.

His confidence, particularly in front of goal, has often appeared shattered under both Lampard and Tuchel.

Werner’s struggles to adapt to the Premier League prompted Tuchel and Roman Abramovich to break the bank and sign Romelu Lukaku for £97.5m.

The former Inter Milan ace arrived at the club as the club’s record transfer, and would have also arrived as the most expensive player in Premier League history, has Jack Grealish not moved to Manchester City for £100m.

Lukaku has also endured his own difficulties at the west Londoners but he, as well as Werner, also found the net against Luton.

"Timo played very well," Tuchel said after the match.

"I am happy about that and the fact that Romelu [Lukaku] got his goal. That is why we left them on the pitch.

"These matches are, at the moment, the most important matches for them, even if they think they should have played this match or that match."

Werner almost seemed relieved by his match-winning performance against the Championship side.

"I am happy that I made my goal and an assist," he told BBC Sport.

"I tried to help the team as much as I could to win the game and this is what we did today."

While Dortmund may be interested in Werner, the German’s £250,000 per week wages could probe to be an unsurmountable stumbling block for Marco Rose’s side.

And Chelsea’s new situation could see the Blues struggle in the upcoming transfer windows.

Roman Abramovich’s shock announcement that he has put the club up for sale connotes an uncertain future for the six-time Premier League champions.
