Tim Anderson will be out for 6 weeks after White Sox shortstop has surgery on his left middle finger

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson will have surgery on his injured left middle finger and is expected to miss about six weeks, the Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday.

The Sox placed Anderson on the 10-day injured list and reinstated reliever Reynaldo López from the 15-day IL between games of their doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals, who won the first game, 4-2.

Anderson suffered a sagittal band tear in the finger on a checked swing during the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers, the Sox said. Anderson looked at his hand after checking his swing, then grounded out to third on the next pitch.

The injury is causing a dislocation of the finger’s exterior tendon, according to the Sox statement, and Anderson will undergo surgery Thursday in Chicago.

“My understanding is he’s getting examined,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday’s first game. “We’ll know something about it by the end of the first game.

“We’re definitely concerned. We’ll see what that exam says.”

Anderson began serving a two-game suspension in Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers at Globe Life Field. The suspension — originally three games for making contact with plate umpire Nick Mahrley on July 29 against the Oakland Athletics — concluded with Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Royals.

Anderson is slashing .301/.339/.395 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 25 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 79 games. He’s eighth in the American League in batting average.

Leury García has filled in at shortstop during the suspension, and the Sox recalled infielder Lenyn Sosa from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.
