Tilda Swinton to hold a master class in Thailand this month

Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton will be in Thailand to hold a master class event on Feb 25, as part of the Thailand’s release of the film Memoria.

Directed by Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Memoria stars Swinton as a botanist in Bogota who’s constantly haunted by a sonic phantom that only she can hear. She sets out on a journey to the Colombian rural, where she encounters several characters as she tries to find out the origin of the sound in her head.

Swinton will be in Bangkok to speak about her career in a master class titled “Tilda Swinton: Acting, Being, Shape-shifting” at Thai Film Archive in Salaya, on Feb 25.

Memoria will be released in Thai cinemas on March 3.

Well-known for her ethereal presence and eclectic choice of roles, Swinton began her career in England the 1980s, appearing in several films by genre-pushing independent directors such as Derek Jarman, Sally Potter and Peter Wollen. She later starred in Hollywood films, notably as The White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia and as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

Swinton has also collaborated with several filmmakers with audacious vision, such as with Bong Joon-ho in Okja, Luca Guadagnino in Suspiria, Jim Jarmusch in Only Lovers Left Alive, and Wes Anderson in The Grand Budapest Hotel. In 2008, she won an Oscar for her supporting role in the corporate thriller Michael Clayton.

Memoria, which is set entirely in Colombia, is her first collaboration with the acclaimed Thai director. The film won a Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival last year.
