TikTok trend sends holidaymakers to unexpected destination for budget fun

A viral TikTok trend has sent bargain-hunting holidaymakers wild, as they flock to unexpected destination, Albania.

The southeastern European country is full of crystal-clear beaches and alcohol is extremely cheap too - proving to be a mega hit among Brits, as reported by The Irish Sun. Located between the popular country of Greece and Montenegro, Albania has seen a large influx of visitors since flights have re-opened successfully after the lockdown ended.

Experts have put it down to videos being shared on TikTok of the country's pristine beaches, clear water and luxury beach bars. Regent Holiday worker Ellie Marr told The Times: "They're big social media users over there and they have capitalised on that.

"In the past a lot of the interest was from people going to discover Albania as an under-the-radar destination with a communist past. Now it's the case that people have seen it in pictures, they've heard about it and realise it's a stunning country for its coast and its natural beauty."

A popular area of the country looks to be a small village in the south, called Ksamil. Videos have garnered popularity with the turquoise waters and a "Bora Bora feel", as described by a tour guide, racking up more than 60 million views on TikTok alone.

Many have suggested that it is similar to visiting Greece at a much lower price. One clip, shared by a British user who goes by Reena Rai on TikTok, said: "It's basically Greece on a budget.

"The beaches are gorgeous, you can always get a lounger. It's really quiet and non-touristy. The food is absolutely incredible and the wine is super cheap." In Ksamil, one glass of wine costs £1.70, and a pint is merely £1.10 a pop. Eating out obviously varies, but Ellie Marr has estimated a three-course meal can cost anywhere from £10 to £22.

Other users praised the country's diverse offerings - everything from "stunning mountains, cute villages, turquoise waters". Eli Solidum said in a video: "I was running out of money after a month in Greece so I hopped on a boat to Albania with no expectations. Wow, it had it all. Albania blew me away."
