TikTok trend sees teens guzzling food colouring 'to turn their urine blue'

From men dipping their testicles in soy sauce to teens placing coins in iPhone chargers, a number of bizarre trends have swept through TikTok in recent weeks.

The latest trend sees teens guzzling food colouring in a strange attempt to ‘turn their urine blue.’

The trend appears to have been started by TikTok user @coltyy, who solely drank blue food colouring for 10 days.

In his first video, he explained: “I’ll be drinking blue food colouring, and only blue food colouring. From what I’ve read online, by the fifth day the colour of my pee will be blue.”

Unsurprisingly, guzzling glasses of blue food colouring resulted in the teen’s teeth turning blue, but he also experienced a range of other effects.

In his Day 10 video, he said: “Number one, my pee has turned blue. Number two, my poop has turned blue too. Number three, I’m turning blue. My skin’s blue guys and my hair is even turning blue. It’s getting wild.”

While @coltyy claims that the practice is ‘harmless’, TikTok has now marked the videos as potentially unsafe.

A warning on his videos now reads: “The action in this video could result in injury.”

Following @coltyy’s videos, several other teens are attempting the challenge, including one of his friends, who is attempting it with green food colouring.

While food colouring is usually harmless in small doses, research has shown a link between certain food colours and ADHD.

Speaking to Health Essentials, Dietitian Julia Zumpano explained: “Some studies show a link between dyes and increased ADHD or hyperactivity in children. An Australian study found 75% of parents noticed an improvement in behaviour and attention once the dyes were eliminated.

“Researchers also found tumour growth in animals that consumed high doses of food dyes, though it can be hard to translate what this means for kids.”

The food colouring trend comes shortly after a trend called the 'Fox Eye' challenge saw teens shaving half of their eyebrows off ‘to look like Kendall Jenner.’

The trend was inspired by Kendall Jenner, who is known for her distinctive eyebrows.

While Kendall likely relies on a team of expert makeup artists to achieve her look, several ambitious teens have attempted tor recreate her look by shaving the ends of the eyebrows off.

Unsurprisingly, the challenge hasn't gone well for many TikTok users.

User @thotimusprimex posted a video of her challenge, sobbing: “Fox eyebrows are a lie and I’m suing you. I miss my eyebrows.”

Meanwhile, @ramonamszros shaved the ends of her eyebrows off, joking: ‘It should be illegal to possess such power.”
