The Golden Globes just served up some piping hot goss that’s got the internet in a tizzy. Director Brady Corbet, who snagged not one but two shiny trophies for his film The Brutalist, might’ve just thrown some shade at Blake Lively and the internet is losing its mind over it.
During his acceptance speech for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Corbet went off-script and dropped this little bombshell: “Final cut tiebreak goes to the director. That’s sort of a controversial statement. It shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be controversial at all.”
Many fans immediately jumped to TikTok to share their thoughts on the speech.
Now, you might be wondering what’s got everyone’s so pressed. Well, it has to do with the full-blown legal drama between Lively her It Ends With Us director, Justin Baldoni.
Both Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have launched lawsuits around the behind the scenes drama of It Ends With Us, with Lively’s complaint accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a “smear campaign” to destroy her reputation.
According to Baldoni’s complaint, two different edits of the film emerged during production — one overseen by him and another commissioned by Lively. When Sony Pictures got wind of the drama, they decided to test both cuts with focus groups.
Baldoni claims his version tested “significantly higher” with focus groups as reported by PEOPLE, but Lively’s cut ultimately became the final film.
According to the complaint, she told the team that Colleen Hoover, the book’s original author, would side with her version if it wasn’t selected. The behind-the-scenes battle didn’t stop there.
Lively reportedly “made certain that Baldoni was removed from all artwork for the film (posters included) and stripped him of his ‘A Film By’ credit”.
During promotion, Lively was pretty open about her involvement. She told Digital Spy, “When you work with me, I’m very passionate… The work I did as an actor on this film pales in comparison to the work that I did outside of the acting.”
Baldoni even praised Lively and told PEOPLE in April 2024, “There wasn’t a part of this production that [Lively] didn’t touch and have influence on. And everything she put her hands on and her mind to, she made better.”
Some reckon Corbet’s speech might even be a cheeky jab at Blake’s hubby, Ryan Reynolds. Remember when Deadpool director Tim Miller left the franchise in 2016? Yeah, apparently that was due to creative differences with Reynolds.
“It became clear that Ryan wanted to be in control of the franchise,” Miller told KCRW.
“You can work that way as a director, quite successfully, but I can’t. I don’t mind having a debate, but if I can’t win, I don’t want to play. And I don’t think you can negotiate every creative decision, there’s too many to make,” he continued.
“So Ryan’s the face of the franchise, and he was the most important component of that, by far. So if he decides he wants to control it, then he’s going to control it.”
Corbet didn’t stop there. He went on to say, “I was told this film was un-distributable. I was told no one would come see it. I was told the film wouldn’t work.
“I don’t resent that, but I want to use this as an opportunity to lift up, when filmmakers, not just my fellow nominees but all the extraordinary directors in the room; films don’t exist without the filmmakers. Please let’s support them. Let’s prop them up.”
Sounds a bit like he’s championing the underdog, doesn’t it?
He even made a plea for studios to take more chances on unlikely stories like his: “No one was asking for a three and a half hour film about a mid-century designer — on 70mm — but it works! So just please think about it.”
Now, we’re not saying Corbet’s definitely throwing shade. For all we know, he could’ve just been making a general statement about the film industry. But let’s be real, the math is in fact mathing.
With Blake Lively’s lawsuit against Justin Baldoni and his lawyer’s recent promise to retaliate, it’s safe to say this drama is just getting started.
