TikTok has revealed its list of the top 10 most-viewed songs on the platform this Aussie summer, which together have been viewed around 3.4 billion times (!).
The data is based on TikTok views in Australia from December to February, but for those assuming the top 10 is filled with radio hits (we’ve had enough Drake this year), think again.
Taking out the number one spot with more than 600 million Australian TikTok views is DJ Naughty Boy and Sam Smith for their 2013 banger “La La La”.
If you don’t recall, that song was used by scores of lip-syncing TikTokers with wild antics happening in both the background and foreground.
“La La La” was joined by fellow throwback track “Paper Planes”, with M.I.A placing as the second most-viewed song on Aussie TikTok this summer. So widespread was this aughties heater — amassing over 585 million views — that it even caught the attention and Diplo and The Wiggles, who know a thing or two about reviving a classic.
It was followed by what was arguably the biggest track of the summer even beyond the FYP — Lola Young’s “Messy”. It felt like I couldn’t go anywhere without being reminded, even by Sofia Richie, of how I “FORGOT TO FOLD MY CLOTHES.”
Taking out the fourth spot was Aussie boy band and soundtrackers of my #angsty teen years, 5 Seconds of Summer. The group’s breakout single “She Looks So Perfect” overran the algorithm this summer, much like how the poster of frontman Luke Hemmings overran my bedroom wall. Who am I kidding, it still hangs proudly.
“It’s 11 years since that song came out and I can’t believe people are still loving it,” Hemmings said in a press statement (though I like to think it was addressed directly to me).
That track was followed in fifth spot by DJ NOTION’s remix of “The Days” by Chrystal — which soundtracked users’ various summer excursions — and sixth place-getter Earth, Wind & Fire for “Let’s Groove”.
If you, like me, used Gracie Abrams to help you get over that summer fling (I’m totally fine now), then you weren’t alone.
Her smash hit “That’s So True” — particularly that belter of a bridge (you know the one) — scored seventh place with a mammoth 255 million views.
Tyler, The Creator nabbed the number eight spot with his Lola Young-assisted “Like Him”, while Sir Mix-A-Lot came in at ninth with “Lockjaw”.
Imogen Heap rounded-out the top ten for 2005 track “Headlock”, proving that if TikTok is good for anything beyond serving me recipes I’ll never cook, it’s reviving classics.
So there it is folks, your most-viewed songs on TikTok this Aussie summer. Now go fold your clothes, ya filthy animals!
