Tiger Woods was offered more than £500million to join the breakaway LIV Golf Series, CEO Greg Norman has confirmed.

There have been reports the 15-time Major winner had been offered $700-800m in a bid to lure him away from the PGA Tour.

When asked about the validity of that figure, Norman told Fox News: “Tiger is a needle mover. So, of course you’ve got to look at the best of the best.

“They originally approached Tiger before I became CEO so, yes, that number is somewhere in that neighbourhood.”

Despite the potential bumper payday, Woods has stayed loyal to the PGA Tour and, along with Rory McIlroy, has been one of the more outspoken voices against golf’s rebel series.

This summer, Woods said: “I disagree with those who have gone to LIV. I think they have turned their back on what allowed them to get to this position.

“I don’t understand it. What these players are doing for guaranteed money, what is the incentive to practise? What is the incentive to go out there and earn it in the dirt?

“You are just getting paid a lot of money up front and playing a few events and playing 54 holes.”
