Tiger Woods' ex-caddie names act golf star 'never, ever did' in surprise revelation

Tiger Woods is one of the best golfers of all time – and is certainly the richest.

Not only has he earned millions in prize money over the years, but he has amassed a fortune by cashing in on his fame with mega-money sponsorship deals.

Despite being one of the wealthiest sportspeople around, his former caddie insists that the American has "never, ever" cared about the cash.

Steve Williams, who carried the bag for Woods for 13 of his 15 major titles, revealed that fact during an appearance on the Chasing Majors podcast.

Williams told host Evin Priest that the cash he won at events was always at the back of his mind as he went through all the post-tournament admin that golfers are required to do.

"One of the things I admire most about Tiger – I admired a lot of things about him – but one thing I absolutely admired about Tiger is that at the completion of a tournament you'd go into the scorer's hut and you sign your scorecard and you hand it in," he said.

"They always have a sheet with the prize money allocation for everybody so you can look up on the screen to see how you finished and look down and see how much you won.

"Tiger never, ever once took a look at that. He played to win trophies and create records, not for prize money."

Instead, Williams said that his biggest motivation was reaching the record for most major titles set by the legendary Jack Nicklaus – Woods is currently three away from the total of 18.

"He's the only player I've ever caddied for, the only player I've ever seen who never, ever looked at that sheet," the New Zealander added.

"OK, you could argue he didn’t need to look at that sheet, but every player looks at that sheet, and he never did."

Williams continued: "Another thing that I admire about him (was) when he was getting approached to go and play in an event overseas.

"All the players always ask, 'What's the purse at that event?'. Tiger never asked what the purse was.

"Whenever he got offers to play at event overseas, the prize money had no bearing on his decision to play or not play in an event that he was invited to overseas."

Woods appears unlikely to match that record from Nicklaus, after admitting a full-time return to the professional tour is off the table since his car crash last February.

The 46-year-old spent many months recovering from extensive damage to his legs, and recently poured cold water on the idea that he would be back playing regularly soon.
