The 2019 Grand National is here with Tiger Roll set to start as the shortest priced favourite in 100 years with odds shortening ahead of the Aintree race.
Tiger Rolls is set to start shorter for the Grand National than when Ernie Piggott won on Porthlyn in 1919 at 11/4.
Not only that, but the Gordon Elliott-trained nine-year-old is also aiming to become the first horse to win back-to-back Nationals since the legendary Red Rum in 1973 and 1974.
Tiger Roll won at Aintree in 2018 at 10/1. Some bookmakers have already had him as short as 4/1 this time around.
That is because many believe the Godolphin-owned gelding looks even better currently than he did a year ago.
Tiger Roll is showing similar form, going onto win the National last time on the back of victory in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham Festival the previous month. Once again in 2019 he triumphed at Cheltenham, winning the same race at a canter.
It was Tiger Roll’s fourth victory at the Festival at Prestbury Park, having also won the Triumph Hurdle in 2014 and National hunt Chase Challenge Cup in 2017.
Davy Russell was the jockey when he won the Grand National last year and that Triumph Hurdle and the Irishman will also be the rider this time around.
However, extra weight will make Tiger Roll’s task on Saturday harder than it was 12 months ago and there is a reason no horse has won successive Nationals in 45 years - it is very, very difficult.
