Tierney’s Arsenal Champions League cameo earns plaudits, some don’t want him to leav

Celtic supporters could soon be celebrating the return of Kieran Tierney, with the defender reportedly set to rejoin the club this month.

On Wednesday night, Tierney appeared to bid farewell to Arsenal fans at the Emirates Stadium during their UEFA Champions League clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

The 27-year-old received a warm reception as he was introduced by manager Mikel Arteta in the 74th minute, replacing Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The appearance, which was actually his first in UEFA’s top competition, marked Tierney’s 128th game for the Gunners since his move from Celtic to the English Premier League in the summer of 2019, and it could be his final outing in front of the Arsenal faithful as a transfer back to Scotland edges closer.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is eager to bring Tierney back to Parkhead this month as his Arsenal contract nears its end.

With Greg Taylor’s future uncertain, the Hoops see Tierney as an ideal addition for the second half of the season.

But with five-and-a-half years service and a bright cameo during the 3-0 triumph over Zagreb, many Arsenal fans are truthfully gutted to see Tierney be allowed to leave.

The Scotland international left-back shared a social media post after the match, prompting thousands of comments from both Celtic and Arsenal enthusiasts.

One read: “Tierney playing for Arsenal in the UCL. We love it.”

Another said: “Always remember that you played a big part in getting us here, KT.”

A third wrote: “Still one of the best defenders we have and you always get forward. No idea what else you could be doing to start. Good to see you back my man.”

While the consensus from those with Celtic-tinted specs was simply, “Get up the road!”
