Ticketmaster cancels Taylor Swift ticket sale as site buckles under high demand

Such is pop star Taylor Swift's popularity, online ticketing giant Ticketmaster can't handle the demand.

Ticketmaster has cancelled tomorrow's general public sale for The Eras Tour because, it says, it doesn't have enough tickets.

The US tour isn't due to begin until March next year, but fans aimed to get in early. The schedule includes more than 50 dates, beginning in Glendale, Arizona.

The Ticketmaster website crashed earlier this week when millions of people logged in to buy tickets for concerts, causing periodic outages and wait times of up to three hours.

Two million tickets were sold during the pre-sale event, which Ticketmaster says is the most number of tickets sold on the platform in a single day.

In addition to Swift, they also sold a further one million tickets for other events across the site on Tuesday (US time).

Shares in Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation Entertainment Inc fell as much as 2.9 per cent after it posted a tweet sharing the news.

The Eras Tour will be Swift's first since her pre-pandemic Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018.

Beginning in Glendale on March 17, the tour wraps up in Los Angeles on August 9.

International dates are expected, but not yet known.

It's unclear how remaining tickets will be sold and how many tickets there are left in the US.

Ticketmaster said the unprecedented traffic on its site was caused by real people, but also by bot attacks.

It said about 15 per cent of interactions included errors, in some cases causing people to lose tickets after they had waited in an online queue.

"While it's impossible for everyone to get tickets to these shows, we know we can do more to improve the experience and that's what we're focused on," the company said in a statement.

The statement went on to point out that it would be impossible to actually meet demand – Swift is just too popular.

"Even when a high demand on sale goes flawlessly from a tech perspective, many fans are left empty handed," the statement read.

"For example: based on the volume of traffic to our site, Taylor would need to perform over 900 stadium shows (almost 20x the number of shows she is doing) … that's a stadium show every single night for the next 2.5 years."

It's been a stellar year for Swift, who broke a Billboard record after releasing her latest album Midnights — claiming all 10 top spots at once.
