Thunderstorms to rumble across Scotland before downpour in Met Office warning

Scots should prepare to batten down the hatches as the country is to be hit by grim weather today.

According to a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office, thunderstorms and heavy showers are likely to cause travel disruptions. The alert is in place for Wednesday, May 10 from 1pm until 8pm this evening.

Parts of central and eastern Scotland could see up to 30mm of rainfall and possible hail, as well as "scattered" thunder and lightning. Forecasters are warning of affected roads, building damage and public transport delays.

Buildings could face possible damage from lightning strikes today, while road spray and standing water may lead to longer journey times. Scots are being urged to plan ahead before travelling, as delays to train services are also likely.

Later tonight, showers will mostly fade, though some persisting in the north and west, along with some patchy mist and fog developing. Thursday will see mist clear by morning and some sunshine, but more showers breaking out quite widely.

Here's what you should know about Scotland's latest weather warning, including areas affected.

A yellow weather warning is in place for central and eastern Scotland today from 1pm until 8pm.

The Met Office said: "Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms will develop through this afternoon across much of central and eastern areas of Scotland, parts of central, eastern and southeastern England and southern areas of Northern Ireland, before easing during the evening.

"Where heavy showers develop, 15 mm of rain could fall within an hour and possibly 25-30 mm in 2-3 hours where showers become slow moving, along with lightning and hail."
