Thunderstorms to hit Scotland for second night in row as 'hazardous' alert issued

Scots should brace for more wet weather tonight as the Met Office has issued a fresh yellow thunderstorm warning.

After parts of the country were doused in torrential rain on Tuesday, a fresh warning is in place on Wednesday, June 21. From noon until 6pm, forecasters are predicting more "heavy showers", hail and lightning resulting in "hazardous conditions".

Up to 20mm of heavy rain is set to fall within a single hour, while 30mm could fall in a three hour period in a few places. The latest alert stretches across the Highlands, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow and commuters in these areas should prepare for transport delays.

It comes after a heavy storm hit parts of the country last night resulting in a deluge of rain. Scotland's Euro 2024 clash against Georgia was suspended as the rain wreaked havoc at Hampden Park. Heavy rain flooded the pitch and forced the players off.

Unsettled conditions are likely to cause disruption again tonight, but most showers and thunderstorms will die out early this evening.

Delays to rail journeys are likely and drivers may be subject to changing road conditions from road spray and hail, resulting in longer journey times. Forecasters are also warning of potential structural damage from lightning strikes.

Despite the grim forecast, temperatures are set to remain above average and will be humid for most regions.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place for eastern Scotland. The alert is in place for Wednesday, June 21 from noon until 6pm this evening.

The Met Office reports: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop from late morning. While many places will miss these, where they do occur some of these will be heavy, perhaps giving 10-20 mm of rain in around one hour and up to 30 mm in 2-3 hours in a few places.

"Hail and lightning are also likely to cause some hazardous conditions. Most of the showers and thunderstorms will die out by late afternoon or early evening."
