Thunderstorms set to batter Scotland as forecasters warn of flooding risks

Scots have been warned that thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong gales will lash parts of the country on Sunday, June 25.

The Met Office has issued an alert for stormy weather covering many parts of the east coast and central areas, warning that the severe weather could lead to flooding and power cuts.

It comes after weeks of unusually warm weather for Scotland and the rest of the UK, brought to an abrupt end by heavy rainfall and a sudden drop in temperatures.

Thunderstorm warning - Sunday, June 25

The warning is for Sunday, June 25 (Met Office)

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms on this day, lasting from 1pm in the afternoon until 9pm at night.

The forecasters said: "Whilst there remains some uncertainty in whether thunderstorms develop as cooler conditions follow from the west, there is a chance that an organised line of thunderstorms could develop across northern Britain during Sunday afternoon before clearing east into the North Sea during the evening.

"This is more likely to happen across eastern parts of the warning area including northeast England and eastern Scotland. Rainfall amounts will vary significantly, but some locations could see 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours.

"Frequent lightning, large hail (up to 3 cm in diameter) and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards."

The weather experts have warned that the following conditions are likely while the alert is in place, urging the public to take extra care whilst out and about.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings and temporary outdoor structures from floodwater, lightning strikes, large hail or strong winds
There is a small chance that some communities become temporarily cut off by flooded roads
Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
