Thugs attacked and robbed terrified Lanarkshire OAP in his home

A pensioner was attacked and robbed by two thugs in his Hamilton home.

The 68-year-old man was knocked to the floor by the intruders, who then forced him to give them his bank cards and PIN number.

One of the attackers, William McInnes, 41, was spared a prison sentence when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted taking part in the robbery at the pensioner's home in Arden Road, in March 2020.

McInnes had put the blame for the robbery on another man who died last summer before he could face trial.

But he then changed his plea to guilty.

A wallet, money, alcohol, a mobile phone and other items were taken from the victim and his bank card was used to try to get money from an ATM.

McInnes, of Hamilton, spent more than a year in prison awaiting trial before getting bail.

The court heard he has addiction issues and he was assessed for a drug treatment and testing order before returning to the dock for sentencing this week.

Defence agent Andy Thomson said McInnes was released in June last year after spending 15 months in custody awaiting trial.

The solicitor added: "He has been on a bail curfew since then.

"Given that backdrop, I wonder if he could be given a chance with a drug treatment and testing order."

Sheriff John Speir said the assessment was "very positive" and McInnes should be "commended" for his engagement with drug workers.

The sheriff told him: "In the circumstances I'm prepared to follow the recommendation of the report and impose an 18-month DTTO."

He warned McInnes that he will be under supervision and if he doesn't cooperate he could go back to jail.
