Thug who threatened to murder woman with meat cleaver while high on valium caged

A man threatened to murder a woman during a row while holding a meat cleaver to her neck.

The violent argument saw 25-year-old Victor Wright appear from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

Wright pleaded guilty to attacking the woman at a property in Silverburn Crescent, Newarthill on December 19.

The court heard Wright and the woman had been in a relationship for seven years but had been living apart.

Wright had been staying with the woman for two nights before the attack took place.

Fiscal Lisa Lamm told the court Wright, whose address was given in court papers as HMP Addiewell, wanted to moved back into the home but the woman refused.

Wright then became more and more aggressive towards her.

He held a meat cleaver against her neck and uttered the words “I’m going to murder you”.

She begged him to stop. Wright put down the meat cleaver but then slapped her across the head.

The woman managed to escape the flat and fled to her mum’s. Police were then called and when officers went to the flat and discovered the meat cleaver in the bedroom

Wright was detained and then arrested.

Wright’s solicitor Diarmid Bruce told the court Wright and the woman were still in a relationship.

The solicitor told the court that both had been taking valium on the night in question with it being described as “a mad night”.

Mr Bruce added: “It was a disagreement and he has let himself down. He hasn’t blamed anyone but himself.

“He has been anxious to plead guilty today. He behaved inappropriately but there were no significant injuries.”

Sheriff Thomas Millar insisted prison was inevitable for Wright in light of previous convictions for assault.

He sentenced Wright to 15 months behind bars.

Charges that Wright smashed a window and damaged a television were dropped by The Crown.
