Renfrewshire thug who threatened boy with a piece of wood is locked up

A violent yob who threatened a teenage boy with a piece of wood before telling a young woman he would stab her has been jailed.

Connor Moran robbed a 15-year-old boy of a speaker and threatened him with the weapon on August 24 last year in Oakshaw Street, Paisley.

Moran, described as a prisoner of HMP Polmont, then went to a property in Johnstone’s Armour Street where he threatened to “stab f**k out of” a young woman in the small hours of August 25.

Both of the incidents were admitted by the thug, who was subject to seven separate bail orders all granted at Paisley Sheriff Court at the time.

Prosecutor Dana Barclay previously explained how the events unfolded.

She told the court: “Around 7.45pm, the complainer was with friends making their way to Oakshaw Street when the accused and another individual approached.

“Moran asked the complainer if they could hang out. The complainer said they didn’t know Moran and didn’t want to socialise with him. Moran then asked the teen, ‘who’s speaker is that?’ He then stated, ‘I’ll keep it for him’.

“The other individual grabbed the speaker and cycled off on a bike. Moran then turned around in possession of a piece of wood which he brandished, resulting in the complainer running off and escaping.

“Police were contacted and attended, traced Moran and checks confirmed he was subject to bail conditions with a curfew which he had breached.”

Ms Barclay then explained how the thug turned up at a house in Johnstone’s Armour Street and threatened to stab a young woman.

The court heard: “Ms Hunter was at home with her mum consuming alcohol when the accused attended around midnight. An argument ensued between Moran and Hunter about her losing her mobile phone.

“Moran became aggressive and produced a black handled kitchen knife and stated, ‘I don’t care if you’re a bird, I will stab f**k out of you.’ Police were contacted and attended and found Ms Hunter in a state of distress.

“Officer checks then confirmed Moran was breaching his curfew bail condition.”

Defence agent Amy Spencer explained Moran understood that a custodial sentence was inevitable, adding that the former chef student had “settled in Polmont” and is keen for a fresh start in life.

Ms Spencer explained: “It’s fairly tragic that he thinks his best chance at a fresh start is after a period in custody. He is hoping to come out of Polmont a better person and with a clear focus in life.

“He is completely settled in Polmont and has two jobs there – he has also just started a math module and goes to the gym.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Bruce Erroch KC said: “It is to your credit you take responsibility for these matters and that there is only one disposal here.

“It’s an aggravating factor that one of these incidents involved a 15-year-old boy and one involved a young woman. You have a number of previous convictions and previous crimes of violence.

“The report says you are at high risk of imminent harm if you continue your drink and drug use. But you have accepted responsibility and you have recognised drink and drugs are a problem for you and you have expressed remorse which all goes in your favour.”

Sheriff Erroch KC jailed Moran for a total of 27 months backdating this to his date of remand in August last year.
