Thug throws smoke bomb into living room of Lanarkshire home

A thug said to be looking for a man who owed him money flung a smoke bomb into the living room of a Hamilton house.

Fortunately, a woman managed to pick up the device and put it in a sink before it could cause any damage.

Dean Haddow, 29, was jailed for six months at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour in Spey Gardens on January 4 while on bail for another matter.

Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said Haddow and another person went to the house around 7pm, looking for ‘John’.

She stated: “A female who opened the door said John wasn’t there.

“Haddow replied ‘Come on, he is’ and entered the property. John at that time was hiding behind a bedroom door.

“The female phoned the police and Haddow called her offensive names.

“He threw a small item - a smoke bomb - into the living room and left. The woman picked it up, wrapped it in a piece of fabric and put it in the sink.”

Defence agent Jackson Bateman said his client was owed money by John, a friend.

Mr Bateman told the court: “He felt John was ignoring him and, stupidly, he acted in the way described.

“He didn’t go there armed with this smoke bomb. It was passed to him by the individual he was with who says he obtained it online.

“It must have been upsetting and it was unacceptable, but thankfully no one was injured and there was no damage to the property.”

Mr Bateman said Haddow, who was on early release from prison at the time, had been “in the grip of drug addiction” and homeless.

Jailing Haddow, Sheriff Andrew McIntyre said his criminal record is “terrible” and various community-based sentences had been tried before.
