Thug subjected man to vicious attack during booze binge

A thug who carried out a vicious attack on a man at an address in Tillicoultry was this week jailed for a year and three months.

Darren Brown had placed a strap around Richard McAlonan’s neck before kicking him on the head and body.

Thirty-six-year-old Brown had admitted a charge on indictment of assaulting Mr McAlonan to his severe injury on October 30, 2019, in Ramsay Terrace.

Brown had first placed a strap round Mr McAlonan’s neck and tightened it before kicking him on the head and repeatedly kicking him on the body. He had also struck Mr McAlonan on the head ‘by means to the prosecutor unknown’.

Brown’s agent James Savage told Stirling Sheriff Court on Wednesday that his client’s lifestyle had the time of the offence had been “entirely unsatisfactory”.

The offence, added Mr Savage, had been committed during an alcohol binge.

Brown’s last conviction before the matter before the court however had been in 2015 and he had remained out of trouble in that time.

A letter from an employer supporting Brown had also been provided.

The lawyer added that since the offence Brown’s lifestyle had settled down and he had moved away to an address in Sauchie.

Mr Savage insisted that Brown had expressed regret over his actions and sympathy for the victim.

But Sheriff Keith O’Mahony told Brown that a jury had convicted him of an amended charge on indictment which remained a serious one.

And while he had no convictions on his record for a number of years, the gravity of the offence before the court meant that the only appropriate way to mark the matter was a period of custody.

He sentenced Brown to a total of 15 months’ imprisonment backdated to July 1 this year.
