Thug blasted by sheriff for 'shocking' 17-year rampage in Lanarkshire town

A repeat offender who has spent the last 17 years causing trouble in East Kilbride was slammed this week for his "shocking" behaviour.

Vicious John Veitch, 33, admitted charges of police assault and threatening or abusive conduct.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he tried to bite a police officer's hand after being arrested in Westwood Road on September 6, last year.

Members of the public had called the police after seeing him in a drunken state around 3pm.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, told the court: "Two officers attended and spoke to the accused to try to ensure his safety.

"He then shouted abuse at them and despite several warnings this behaviour continued.

"He was placed in the police vehicle and continued to shout and swear, threatening to kill PC Scott Lanaghan.

"Due to his aggressive behaviour the police vehicle had to stop. PC Lanaghan went to the back of it and the accused lunged towards him in an attempt to bite him on the hand."

Veitch was then taken to Wishaw General Hospital to have a graze on his head checked.

The fiscal added: "He continued to act aggressively there and shouted abuse at a doctor, refusing any medication."

Veitch's agent admitted his criminal record "does him no favours". He remembered "very little" about the latest offences.

Veitch has been in prison since his arrest in September and Sheriff Andrew McIntyre said he would consider imposing supervision as an alternative to more jail time.

The sheriff stated: "This was shocking behaviour. From his record, it seems that for 17 years he has been running around the local area, shouting, swearing and assaulting people."

Sentence was deferred until next month and Veitch was again remanded in custody.
