Thug avoids prison sentence at Airdrie Sheriff Court after attacking ex-partner

A Monklands thug narrowly avoided a prison sentence at Airdrie Sheriff Court this week.

Scott Simmonds, 29, admitted assaulting the woman in Langloan Street on May 16 last year. He also admitted breaching a bail order imposed earlier, banning contact with his former partner.

The court heard he was shouting and banging on the woman's door at 5.30am.

She didn't want him to wake the neighbours so eventually let him in.

Simmonds was intoxicated and started drinking again before accusing his ex of being unfaithful.

He then grabbed her and shoved her face against a window sill in the kitchen.

She pulled away from him, but he grabbed her again, banged her head off the window sill and grabbed her glasses.

Police arrived to find the woman "extremely distressed". She had a small lump on the back of her head.

Defence agent Simon Gilmour said Simmonds had been going through "a difficult period", but hadn't helped himself by drinking a "significant" amount.

The solicitor stated: "He accepts he should not have been at his ex-partner's address and regrets his conduct. There is no excuse for it."

Sheriff Fergus Thomson told Simmonds it was a serious matter to breach bail conditions then assault a woman he had been ordered to stay away from.

The sheriff added: "Your behaviour was disgraceful. Be in no doubt how close you are to custody.

"By a narrow margin I'll impose a community payback order as an alternative. Hopefully, supervision will give you support to change your ways."

Simmonds will be under supervision for 12 months and must complete 216 hours of unpaid community work.

He was also handed a one-year non-harassment order, preventing him from causing the woman "alarm or distress".
