Justin Rose put himself into position to win The Open Championship at Troon after making an excellent start to the final round alongside overnight leader Billy Horschel and South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence.

Rose, who shot to prominence at the 1998 Open at Royal Birkdale as the leading amateur, is bidding to win the Claret Jug for the first time and made three birdies to reach the back nine at -6 overall.

2019 Open champion Shane Lowry fired himself into contention, while Americans Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are also in pursuit. Jon Rahm was the early mover but the Spaniard’s hot start faded.

England’s major debutant Dan Brown dropped away on the front nine, after leading the Open heading up the 18th last night before carding a double bogey on the final hole.
