Three women have tragically passed away after consuming a Christmas cake in a suspected poisoning incident in Brazil. The unfortunate event took place in the city of Torres, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Five members of the same family, including four women and one child, fell ill after partaking in the cake on Christmas Eve.
Following the consumption of the cake, the individuals sought medical attention, with three of the women succumbing to the poisoning. The fourth woman, who had prepared the cake, and her 10-year-old great-nephew are currently undergoing treatment at Hospital Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes. Fortunately, their condition is showing signs of improvement.
Reports indicate that arsenic was found in the blood of three family members, although it has not been confirmed whether these individuals were among the deceased. Authorities suspect foul play and have seized the cake for forensic analysis. Investigations are ongoing, with a focus on the possibility of food tampering.
During the examination of the property where the cake was made in Arroio do Sal, authorities discovered several expired products. This finding has raised concerns about the safety and hygiene practices in the food preparation process.
In Brazil, Christmas Eve holds significant cultural importance as the primary event of the holiday season. With a majority of the population being Catholic, the night before Christmas is marked by attending midnight mass, exchanging gifts, and gathering with extended family members for festive celebrations.
