Three unexpected stars of the World Cup so far that Arsenal can sign for £34m in January

There's already been some special performances at the World Cup, both by individual players and teams as a collective.

Tuesday produced one of the most shocking results in history as Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in Group C, whilst England were relentless in their 6-2 win over Iran on Monday. Arsenal's Bukayo Saka starred on the day as he netted two goals, becoming the youngest Three Lion ever to score a brace at the competition.

Although Saka will be fully focused on England, Edu, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal's scouting network will be following some hidden gems across the tournament. With that in mind, let's take a look at some unexpected stars who the Gunners could look to sign in the winter transfer market.

Joakim Maehle (Denmark)

25-year-old Atalanta full-back Maehle was awarded the Player of the Match award for his performance in Denmark's 0-0 draw with Tunisia. Although Arsenal are currently stacked with left-back options, the good thing about Maehle is that he's incredibly versatile, something that Mikel Arteta appreciates. Having often operated as a left-sided midfielder, as well as a defensive midfielder, he'd surely be able to adapt to Arsenal's style of play. He's valued at £12million but because his contract doesn't expire until 2025, the Gunners would have to pay over the odds to sign him.

Cesar Montes (Mexico)

Montes held things together at the back for Mexico against Poland, especially in the first half when the South American's completely blunted the European nation's attack. He had the difficult job of marshalling Robert Lewandowski, but he stayed tight to the forward in the opening 45 minutes and ensured he remained quiet with superb defensive play. He also looked comfortable in possession, which is something that's important to Arteta and Co.

Although Arsenal would prefer another left-footed option at centre-back, at just £6m from CF Monterrey, the 25-year-old could be an option worth exploring.

Adrien Rabiot (France)

Rabiot probably wouldn't have been starting for France had N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba been fit to play in the competition. Nevertheless, the Juventus midfielder was thoroughly impressive against Australia as he scored the first goal of France's 4-1 win.

Much has been said about him potentially moving to the Premier League when his contract expires next summer. He's currently valued at £15.6million, but perhaps Arsenal could tempt the Old Lady into selling him for a lower price in January.
