Three-truck crash closes part of the Pacific Highway near Kempsey, NSW

A crash involving three trucks has closed part of the Pacific Highway on the NSW mid north coast.

The semi-trailer and the front trailer of a B-double was destroyed by fire.

A third truck has sustained structural damage in the accident, but was not caught in the blaze.

Emergency crews have been on the scene working to pull apart the trucks and their loads.

A recovery operation was underway, with one of the trailers carrying 18 200-litre steel drums containing what has been identified as a lubricant oil.

"It's [the oil] showing about 100 degrees Celsius at the moment so crews are cooling those down before we can remove and make the area safe", Fire and Rescue NSW's Tony Lenthall said.

"It's being handled very well at the moment and should be made safe in the next few hours."

Mr Lenthall said an exclusion zone had been established due to the burning of rubber and oil.

"[We will] keep everybody including our firefighters out of that unless they're wearing protected breathing apparatus".

One of the drivers has been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Southbound lands on the Pacific Highway have reopened.

One northbound lane remains closed as the extensive clean-up continues.
