PLANS for the demolition of three tower blocks with a controlled explosion in North Lanarkshire have been announced.
A controlled explosion was confirmed as the safest and most effective method for demolishing the Allan, Coursington, and Draffen towers in Motherwell by North Lanarkshire Council this year.
The three towers were expected to be destroyed earlier but technical issues had delayed the demolition.
The three empty towers will be destroyed in a single blowdown event to minimise disruption to the local community.
North Lanarkshire Council said an exclusion zone will be implemented to protect residents, along with temporary road and footpath closures.
An exact date for the demolition is yet to be set but the local authority said it is expected to take place at the end of this year.
Stephen Llewellyn, chief housing officer, said the blowdown method was “carefully selected” following extensive specialist surveys and consultations with expert demolition engineers.
He said: “We are delighted to now be able to move forward with these plans and want to thank all surrounding residents and businesses for their patience.
“We recognise that this process has taken longer than anticipated and has caused some disruption, but safety remains our top priority.
“The controlled blowdown method has been carefully selected following extensive specialist surveys and consultations with expert demolition engineers.”
Michael McPake, the council’s housing convener, added: “This is a significant milestone in our commitment to building a better future for Motherwell.
“We will continue to work closely with the community to ensure a safe and smooth process.”
