Three things we learned from Celtic vs Real Madrid as holders teach big stage lesson in opener

Celtic opened up their Champions League campaign with a defeat to the holders as Real Madrid left Glasgow with all three points.

It was an encouraging performance in spells from the Hoops who really took the game to the Spanish giants in the opening 45 minutes and went so very close through Callum McGregor.

But at Europe's top table you need to take your chances when on top and the visitors showed how quickly a game can turn on its head as they fired twice in four second half minutes to take the sting out of the matchday one showdown in what was a cauldron of noise at Parkhead. Vinicius JR and Luka Modric were the scorers before Eden Hazard added a third from close range. Ange Postecoglou and his Celtic side can take plenty of encouragement from the way they opened the game and how they played in large periods for the rest of their campaign and can take a valuable lesson from this one.

Class above

Real Madrid are arguably the best club team in world football.

Celtic pilled on the pressure in the first half and rattled the post through McGregor.

Just minutes into the second-half Daizen Maeda had a huge chance which he failed to take.

Then the European champions showed how quick the game can turn as they punished the home side twice in four second half minutes before adding a third late on.

That's what happens at this level. Plenty of positives to take for the Hoops and some valuable lessons learned for the remaining matches in the section.

Stick to plan A

Postecoglou has his style and that is how his team will play.

Celtic came out of the traps flying forcing early corners and creating a series of chances.

That quick throw-in was also a feature of their play as they pressed Real Madrid high.

It's a brave tactic to employee against the Champions League holders and Europe's top club side.

Give Ange credit. Very brave and courageous of his team and staff.

It wasn't to be this time around but they can take great heart from how they played in large periods of the game.

Only time will tell if the Aussie boss decides to tinker with his approach in future Champions League match nights.

That atmosphere

Players past and present have always raved about the famous European nights at Parkhead.

Even former Real Madrid and Liverpool star Michael Owen gave it big licks pre-match stating it was the best he's ever played in.

And once again the Celtic support didn't disappoint as 'You'll Never Walk Alone' rang out pre-match ahead of the huge roar as the famous Champions League anthem belted out. The noise carried on throughout the full 90 minutes and beyond.

It will always be a night to remember for Hoops fans and players facing the European champions - but you can bet for the likes of Karim Benzema, Vini JR and Co this is one they will be putting in the scrapbook.
