Three things we learned as Hibs lose winning run at Dundee United with refereeing confusion arising

Hibs have lost 1-0 against Dundee United on their latest Premiership outing.

It was an open first half at Tannadice but the Hibees found themselves behind at half-time through an Aziz Behich effort near the start of the first half. Controversy arose when Myola Kukharevych appeared to score a perfectly legal goal but it was chopped off when the referee and his assistant appeared to signal for two different outcomes.

A basketball-style tempo was being played out and Ewan Henderson plus Martin Boyle among the Hibs players to miss opportunities against a Dundee United side rejuvenated under Liam Fox. The Easter Road side had won four on the spin prior to this but have tasted defeat in a bump back to earth despite several chances. Here are three things we learned about Lee Johnson's side from this one.

Open affair

The first half brought a grand total of 15 shots between the sides. Not all of them were on target but it showed the open nature of this fixture. By full-time, that total was 28.

There were big chances on both sides and the biggest surprise from this was that it remained a low-scoring affair.

When you need it most

It's been reported this week that VAR is good to go in Scotland and Hibs might be wondering why it's not in place at this one. Elie Youan's scissor kick fell perfectly for Myola Kukharevych to slot home and neither were offside.

Replays appeared to show the referee signalling for push on a Dundee United player by Youan but the assistant flagged for an offside. A confusing situation which aids the argument over why technology is needed.

Winning run

It's been a fine period for the Hibees who have registered victories over two of last season's top six, plus Aberdeen and Kilmarnock since losing 1-0 at St Mirren.

But this ends that but Johnson will be heartened by his team creating so many opportunities.
